Greene County teachers bagged groceries at Fareway and Hy-Vee last Friday and Saturday as a follow-up to a book study they recently completed.
The teachers’ goal was to improve the school culture within the community. They donned Greene County Schools shirts and included in the groceries they bagged was a flyer listing the district’s vision and mission statements. On the reverse side of the flyer, students drew pictures thanking community members for supporting the schools.
The book, “The Will to Lead, the Skill to Teach,” by Sharroky Hollie and Anthony Muhammad, notes that school improvement begins with a self-examination and conversation about socialization, bias, discrimination and cultural insensitivity. The book provides tools and strategies to assess and improve classroom management, increase literacy, establish academic vocabulary, and contribute to a healthier school culture.
Author Muhammad is the speaker at a staff professional day Jan. 22.
